Mormonism ready for E.T.  An overview of Mormonism and extra-terrestrial thought

A new survey suggests the beliefs of the Mormon Church may be the most likely to survive an encounter with extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI).

.........

Note how high Mormons score. Many Mormon respondents added comments to the effect that belief in ETI is already a part of Mormon doctrine. "My religion (LDS, Mormon) already believes in extra-terrestrials."

Mormon Origins of ETI belief

After Joseph Smith translated and published the Book of Mormon in 1830, he began translating the Bible. The text included "and he [Moses] beheld many lands; and each land was called earth, and there were inhabitants on the face thereof." Then the Lord explained to Moses "there are many worlds that have passed away by the word of my power. And there are many that now stand, and innumerable are they unto man." (Book of Moses 1:28-35) This was later canonized as scripture of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

His translation also stated that many sought "the city of Enoch which God had before taken, separating it from the earth, having reserved it unto the latter days, or the end of the world." (Inspired Version, Genesis 14:34 [not canonized]) Joseph Smith's grand-nephew, apostle Joseph Fielding Smith affirmed this idea in 1954, "we are taught that portions of this earth have been taken from it, such as the city of Enoch, which included the land surface as well as the people. Yet the earth has maintained its steady course." (Doctrines of Salvation 2:316 & 1:62).

Can we please go back to priesthood manuals from 50 years ago?

Excerpts of Can we please go back to priesthood manuals from 50 years ago? by Doug Gibson , Standard Examiner

--

I came across the 1960 Course of Study for the Melchizedek Priesthood Quorum. It's titled "Apostasy to Restoration," by T. Edgar Lyon. I borrowed the book, eager to compare today's vanilla-brand manuals with one a half-century old.

Reading "Apostasy to Restoration" is like unearthing ancient scripture. Did we actually have lessons like this 50 years ago, that discussed

  • "the Absence of Mysticism in the Apostolic Christianity," or
  • "the Fragments of Papias," or
  • "Irenaues' Concept of the Ultimate Potential of Man," or
  • "Christian Gnosticism," or
  • "The Diocletian Persecution," or
  • "Ambrose the Christian Statesman," or
  • "the Contributions of Monasticism," or
  • "Pope Leo the Great (440-464 A.D.), or
  • "Reformation Trends in Switzerland" …?

Lyon's thesis from the University of Chicago was on early LDS apostle Orson Pratt. He eventually received a doctorate in history from the University of Utah and was president of the Mormon History Association in the 1970s. He died in 1978.

Lyon's book/manual is fascinating. I envy the Melchizedek Priesthood holders who used it in their classes 50 years ago. I look at the current manuals — sans author(s) name(s) — and while I'm OK with what's being taught I wish we could have a re-run of "Apostasy to Restoration." It must have been quite satisfying to learn something new in every lesson.

Mormon theology in particular would survive discovery of Extra Terrestrial Intelligence

"Could the world's religions survive the discovery of extraterrestrial life? Or would their beliefs be so shaken that they would eventually collapse?"

A recent study suggests religion could survive discovery of ET.

Mormons may have the highest rate of acceptance of Extra Terrestrial Intelligence (ETI). Researchers commented:

Note how high Mormons score. Many Mormon respondents added comments to the effect that belief in ETI is already a part of Mormon doctrine. "My religion (LDS, Mormon) already believes in extra-terrestrials."

Regarding the question "Extraterrestrial beings are likely to have religious beliefs and practices which will conflict sharply with established beliefs and practices as we know them on earth," most Mormon strongly disagreed. Researchers commented:

We note the singular strength of disagreement among Mormons, perhaps due to the existing incorporation of ETI into Mormon theology.

An 1832 revelation received by Joseph Smith stated .........

Mormon Literature Year in Review: 2009

Andrew's Mormon Literature Year in Review: National Market 2009

By William Morris | 1.26.10

Wm writes: Once again AMV is proud to bring you Andrew Hall's Year in Review in Mormon letters.

The story of the year in nationally published literature by Mormons was the memoir.  Two Mormon women, Elna Baker and Kathryn Lynard Soper produced honest and interesting life stories, to excellent reviews. While other Mormon authors sold more books, few other nationally published author made their Mormonism so central to their story.  Other big stories for the year include Stephanie Meyer's continued dominance of the fiction landscape, Brandon Sanderson's rise to the top of best seller's lists, and the continuing flood of young adult speculative fiction.

Prop. 8 film debut

Excerpts of Moviegoers applaud Prop. 8 film critical of LDS Church By Sean P. Means, The Salt Lake Tribune
01/25/2010
--
Cowan received two sustained standing ovations Sunday for his documentary "8: The Mormon Proposition," which harshly criticizes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its campaigning for California's ban on same-sex marriage, from the 600-strong audience attending the film's world premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Some in the audience cried when hearing stories of gay men and lesbians recounting discrimination they have suffered. Others hissed when Utah Eagle Forum President Gayle Ruzicka appeared on-screen, or when State Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, appeared to declare homosexuality "the greatest threat to America going down."

Mostly, though, they applauded and cheered Cowan's film for presenting evidence of the LDS Church's work to persuade its members to donate money to the campaign for California's anti-gay Proposition 8 -- and to hide the church's involvement, knowledge of which would have dissuaded voters, through front organizations.

Cowan, a former Salt Lake City TV reporter who was raised in the Mormon faith, told the audience he was compelled to make "8: The Mormon Proposition" because "I was a kid in Roosevelt, Utah, who knew what it was like to be called a faggot."

Elder Hafen warns of Internet info

Excerpts of Focus on the known of the restoration, Elder Hafen
counsels by Molly Farmer, Mormon Times
Monday, Jan. 25, 2010

There are many wondrous components of the gospel for Mormons to focus
their study on rather than unsubstantiated details and rumors, said
Elder Bruce C. Hafen at a fireside for young adults Sunday, Jan 24.

He compared people who get hung up on murky specifics to golfers at
the base of such mountains scouring the rough for golf balls rather
than looking up and taking in the splendor.

"Look at the restoration's content, don't get lost in the sometimes
unclear details and footnotes," he said.

Elder Hafen related his remarks specifically to anti-Mormon literature
found on the Internet, and stated that too many people of faith let
initial curiosity give way to feelings of dismay and betrayal when
they come across unfamiliar arguments against the church.

Faithful questioning is a hallmark of a searching soul, he said, but
claims found in anti-Mormon literature are no reason to abandon one's
testimony, especially because many of the issue-taking and arguments
out there have already been addressed by Mormon scholars and leaders.

The democratization of ideas sometimes confuses the reader as to what
is true and what is not, as all ideas are presented horizontally and
as fact, thus positioning the blogger's flippant opinion alongside the
scholar's well-researched dissertation.

Elder Hafen said there is much discussion out there regarding the
methods through which Joseph Smith translated ancient scripture such
as the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price and the Bible.

"How (Joseph Smith) received it doesn't ultimately matter to us very
much," he said.

Other "mountains" in the gospel are the doctrines of premortal life
and eternal nature of the soul, the Mormon rejection of original sin
and the hallowed, the nature of the Godhead, and the elevated way the
church views Eve.

When a person considers how unique the church's understanding of core
doctrine differs drastically from the rest of Christianity, "It
shouldn't come as a big surprise that other Christian churches don't
know quite what to do with us."

Members of the church could stand to give some of these "mountains"
more thought and contemplation than they currently do, as they are far
more revolutionary than Mormons sometimes think.

Mormon Stories 2.0

Excerpts of Mormon Stories 2.0 – And How You Can Help  by johndehlin at MormonMatters

--
Mormon Stories is an audio podcast interview series where I interview Mormons of all types — from Richard Bushman to Grant Palmer — and give them a chance to tell their stories.  The full archive of my past interviews can be found here.

The focus for the forseeable future will be on the following things:

  • Mormon Culture: Interviewing interesting people from within Mormon culture, including artists, writers, film makers, bloggers, politicians, athletes, professionals, activists, etc.
  • Faith Strugglers: Helping to build awareness and empathy for, and provide LDS church members who are currently struggling with their traditional, literalistic LDS faith/testimony, including those who have either gone inactive or have left the church.  The goal here would be NOT to encourage people to either leave or stay in the church, but instead to provide role models across the faith spectrum (Apologetic, StayLDS, New Order Mormon, ExMo, PostMo, etc.) to support them in making their own decisions about how to best navigate their faith journey.
  • Mixed-Faith LDS Marriages: Provide support to LDS marriages wherein one or both within the couple have lost their traditional, literalistic LDS faith.  The goal here would be to reduce the number of Mormon-related divorces by providing role models, tips and tricks to help couples get on the same page faith-wise (where possible), and  to support them in their transition/renegotiation in a way that preserves and even strengthens the marriage.  We also hope to focus some on raising children within a mixed faith or non-traditional LDS paradigm/belief structure.
  • Mormon Mental Health: Because of my interest in Psychology, I plan to do a deep dive into Mormon-related mental health issues including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, abuse, sexual addiction/pornography and addiction.

LDS Church documents used in Prop 8 trail

--
Excerpt from Being Gay Not A Choice, Judge Hears, By Carlos Santoscoy-- On Top Magazine

In one email, church officials acknowledge they have 20,000 volunteers supporting Proposition 8. And for the first time, the communications reveal that the church actively attempted to hide its involvement in the campaign: "With respect to Prop. 8 campaign, key talking points will come from campaign, but cautious, strategic, not to take the lead so as to provide plausible deniability or respectable distance so as not to show that church is directly involved."

Documents unveiled later revealed the Catholic and Mormon churches played a major role in passing Proposition 8.

An e-mail from the executive director of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to the bishops and a cardinal said Catholics were crucial in providing money and volunteers to qualify Proposition 8 for the ballot.

The e-mail also praised the Mormon Church, saying it had provided "financial, organizational and management contributions" for the measure.

A memo by a Mormon Church public affairs officer said the Proposition 8 campaign was "entirely under priesthood direction," and the minutes of a Mormon Church meeting said members should not take the lead in promoting Proposition 8 but should work through protectmarriage.com.

The church document said a teleconference had been held in Salt Lake City with 159 of 161 Mormon leaders in California. The leaders were told to encourage members to contribute $30 each for Proposition 8, toward a projected goal of $5 million, in addition to general fundraising.

Andy Pugno, a lawyer for the Proposition 8 campaign, said in an interview that it was "astonishing" that the court allowed into evidence internal communications of churches.

"Today has been a major expression of religious bigotry," Pugno said of Wednesday's testimony. "The gloves have clearly come off, and religious voters are in the cross-hairs."

Mormon Media Studies Symposium Paper Call

CALL FOR CONFERENCE PAPERS AND PANELS

Sponsored by BYU Department of Communications, BYU Broadcasting, and BYU Studies

In Conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of BYU Broadcasting

November 11 & 12, 2010
Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, USA

Conference Theme:
"Mormon Media Studies: Across Time, Space, and Disciplines"

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members have been highly visible in the media in recent years, and also have been actively engaged in the production of media content. While circumstances and technologies have changed over time, the media always have been central to the Mormon experience, and to the interface of Mormonism with societies, institutions, and individuals. This first-ever interdisciplinary Mormon Media Studies Symposium will focus on the academic study of all aspects of Mormons and the media, in the present as well as the past. (The term "media" is used broadly to encompass print and electronic media, books, film, etc.)

Submission of Paper and Panel Proposals
Academics, practitioners, and students are invited to submit competitive papers or panel proposals about any aspect of Mormons and the media. Papers and panels may be broadly interdisciplinary; international perspectives are encouraged; all rigorous scholarly methodological frameworks and theories are welcome.  Audio-visual presentations (with rigorous analysis) and short films are welcome. Papers recently presented or published elsewhere may be considered (provide full information). Submissions (which will be peer-reviewed) may be made in three categories: Full Papers; Presentation Papers; and Panels.  Full papers should be approx. 6,000-8,000 words. They will be considered by BYU Studies for possible publication (if the author wishes). (They must be adapted for a 20-25 minute presentation.)  Presentation papers should be approx. 3,000 words.  They may be accepted to presentation, panel, or poster sessions.  Panel proposals should be approx. 2-3 pages. They should include panel topic and relevance, and panel members' names, titles, and contact information. For all submissions, include title and short abstract (100 words), author's full name, title or student status, and contact information. Identifying information should appear only on the cover page.

Deadline:  Papers and panel proposals must be submitted by June 30, 2010 in Word or PDF formats as an e-mail attachment to Dr. Sherry Baker at: sherry_baker@byu.edu.

As this is the first ever interdisciplinary Mormon Media Studies Symposium, the range of topics to be explored in paper and panel sessions is wide. Possible topics falling under the theme of the conference include but are not limited to:
·          Analyses of media content by or about Mormons (textual, rhetorical, thematic, etc.)
·          Mormon media (contemporary, historical, international, etc.): newspapers, magazines, books, television, radio, film, Internet, social sites, etc.

Bible Possibly Written Centuries Earlier, Text Suggests

Bible Possibly Written Centuries Earlier, Text Suggests

Scientists have discovered the earliest known Hebrew writing — an
inscription dating from the 10th century B.C., during the period of
King David's reign.

The breakthrough could mean that portions of the Bible were written
centuries earlier than previously thought. (The Bible's Old Testament
is thought to have been first written down in an ancient form of
Hebrew.)

Until now, many scholars have held that the Hebrew Bible originated in
the 6th century B.C., because Hebrew writing was thought to stretch
back no further. But the newly deciphered Hebrew text is about four
centuries older, scientists announced this month.

"It indicates that the Kingdom of Israel already existed in the 10th
century BCE and that at least some of the biblical texts were written
hundreds of years before the dates presented in current research,"
said Gershon Galil, a professor of Biblical Studies at the University
of Haifa in Israel, who deciphered the ancient text.

BCE stands for "before common era," and is equivalent to B.C., or before Christ.

The writing was discovered more than a year ago on a pottery shard dug
up during excavations at Khirbet Qeiyafa, near Israel's Elah valley.
The excavations were carried out by archaeologist Yosef Garfinkel of
the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. At first, scientists could not
tell if the writing was Hebrew or some other local language.

Finally, Galil was able to decipher the text. He identified words
particular to the Hebrew language and content specific to Hebrew
culture to prove that the writing was, in fact, Hebrew.

"It uses verbs that were characteristic of Hebrew, such as asah
('did') and avad ('worked'), which were rarely used in other regional
languages," Galil said. "Particular words that appear in the text,
such as almanah ('widow') are specific to Hebrew and are written
differently in other local languages."

The ancient text is written in ink on a trapezoid-shaped piece of
pottery about 6 inches by 6.5 inches (15 cm by 16.5 cm). It appears to
be a social statement about how people should treat slaves, widows and
orphans. In English, it reads (by numbered line):

1' you shall not do [it], but worship the [Lord].
2' Judge the sla[ve] and the wid[ow] / Judge the orph[an]
3' [and] the stranger. [Pl]ead for the infant / plead for the po[or and]
4' the widow. Rehabilitate [the poor] at the hands of the king.
5' Protect the po[or and] the slave / [supp]ort the stranger.

The content, which has some missing letters, is similar to some
Biblical scriptures, such as Isaiah 1:17, Psalms 72:3, and Exodus
23:3, but does not appear to be copied from any Biblical text.

Expanded biography of Spencer W. Kimball published

Excerpts of Biography of Mormon prophet expandedexaminer.com
---
An expanded biography of LDS Church president Spencer W. Kimball has just been published. Disagreements between the author and the publisher had resulted in a compromise in an earlier version, with some content edited out.

But now, in an agreement between author the prophet's son and author Edward Kimball,  church-owned Deseret Book and Benchmark Books, the complete "working draft" has been published in book format.

Lengthen Your Stride focused on the twelve years that Spencer W. Kimball served as president of the LDS Church.

In the preface, the publisher declared:

The publisher and the biographer do not agree on the interpretations or weight of importance given to a number of events, or the choices of characterization of some of the people. The author and the publisher have had open and energetic discussions on these issues, and there has been some give and take in the editorial process. The resulting book reflects a compromise between the two points of view.

Edward explains that in his biographical writing "I have tried to always deal with sensitive issues cautiously but candidly," wanting the reader to "receive a fair telling of the full story, rather than a sanitized version from which the humanness has been leached."

Edward Kimball will speak about the book Wednesday, January 20, at 6:00 PM, and will answer questions and sign books.  Benchmark Books is located at 3269 South Main Street, Salt Lake (801) 486-3111.
