Memorial held for gay Mormon who committed suicide

Excerpts of Memorial held for gay Mormon who committed suicide in Los Altos by Diana Samuels
--

Ten years ago, Henry Stuart Matis walked up to the steps of a Mormon church in Los Altos with a note reading "Do not resuscitate" pinned to his shirt, and shot himself.

He was a 32-year-old gay man and devoted member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and after a lifetime spent struggling to reconcile the two, explained in a suicide note that "for the first time in over 20 years, I am free from my pains.

"As I believed that I was a Christian, I believed that I could never be gay," he wrote. "Perhaps my death ... might become the catalyst for much good ... Your actions might help to save many young people's lives."

Early Thursday morning — the 10th anniversary of Matis' death — a group of local Mormons and others held a memorial vigil for Matis in Los Altos.

Robert Rees of the Santa Cruz stake, who served as a spiritual adviser to Matis, said the event was meant "to honor a good man who left life much earlier than he should have, whose passing was tragic but whose message was one of hope to other people."

George Cole, a San Francisco resident who is gay and serves on the executive committee of Affirmation, a support and advocacy group for gay and lesbian current and former Mormons, said he didn't know Matis personally but has "lost too many very good friends to suicide.

"I know what it is like to seriously consider taking your life, he said.

Cole said he left the Mormon church in 2002.

"I chose happiness and fulfillment at the cost of not having the church in my own life," he said.

BYU Studies Symposium

BYU Studies Symposium

BYU Symposium Logo

Title: "Of Things Both in Heaven and in the Earth" D&C 88: 78, 79

When: March 12–13, 2010

Where: Hinckley Alumni Center on Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah

What: To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, BYU Studies is holding a special symposium on Friday, March 12, and Saturday, March 13, in the beautiful Hinckley Alumni and Visitor's Center at Brigham Young University. The theme, which captures the mission statement of BYU Studies, is drawn from D&C 88:78–79, "Of Things Both in Heaven and in the Earth." The event is free and open to the public. A preliminary schedule is available at byustudies.byu.edu.

Three plenary sessions and four blocks of concurrent sessions, from 9:00 am on Friday until 3:00 pm on Saturday, will feature more than fifty fascinating presenters. A poster session, scheduled for Friday afternoon, will highlight recent research from a variety of disciplines by both seasoned professors and younger scholars.

The three plenary speakers are Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Professor of Church History and Doctrine and publications director of the Religious Studies Center at BYU; Van C. Gessel, Professor of Japanese and former Dean of the College of Humanities at BYU; and George S. Tate, Professor of Humanities and Comparative Literature and former Dean of Undergraduate Education at BYU. Holzapfel will share new discoveries about Wilford Woodruff's 1897 recorded testimony concerning Joseph Smith and the succession in the Church presidency. Gessel will examine the challenges of introducing Christian vocabulary into non-Christian cultures. Tate will give a behind-the-scenes look at his work on the 1918 influenza pandemic and the 1918 revelation that became Doctrine and Covenants 138, recently published in BYU Studies and the Ensign.

According to Welch, those who come will have the chance to meet "other like-minded individuals who enjoy exploring a variety of topics" along with several BYU Studies authors. "This symposium will help involve readers in the academic experience," explains Welch.

Controversial Cardinal speaks at BYU

A Catholic Cardinal accused of protecting child-molesting priests from exposure and arrest spoke at BYU.  SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has called for the Cardinal's resignation.  Below are Excerpts of the Salt Lake Tribune article by regarding his speech at BYU by Kristen Mounton Cardinal tells BYU: We must work together for religious liberty.

--
A Roman Catholic cardinal told a huge audience Tuesday at Brigham Young University that Mormons and Catholics must strive together to proclaim truth even as pressures mount to exclude religion from the public square.

George -- with LDS apostles M. Russell Ballard and Quentin L. Cook on the dais -- noted the two faiths have worked together to alleviate world poverty, combat pornography, defend the unborn and push for traditional marriage.

"I'm personally grateful," George said, "that, after 180 years of living mostly apart from one another, Catholics and Latter-day Saints have come to see one another as trustworthy partners in the defense of shared moral principles."

Marriage, the union of one man and one woman, must be defended, he added, "against various efforts to redefine in civil law that foundational element of God's natural plan for creation."

George said Mormons and Catholics are called to respect and love all people, including those who are gay, because they are children of God.

"That doesn't mean we must approve of everything everyone does," said George, who later noted that his family, like many others, includes gays.

He decried the "quasi-fascist tactics" and "thuggery" engaged in by some after California voters approved Proposition 8 in 2008, banning gay marriage in the Golden State. Churches, particularly LDS meetinghouses, were vandalized after the election.

Freedom of religion, George said, is a fundamental right that cannot be reduced merely to a freedom to worship or freedom of conscience, as some in this country now advocate.

Such a limited notion of religious freedom is not the American tradition, he said. "It was the tradition of the Soviet Union."

True religious freedom, he said, includes "the right to exercise influence in the public square."

Maryland will recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/24/AR2010022403630.html

Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler (D) said Wednesday that effective immediately, and until challenged in court, the state recognizes same-sex marriages performed elsewhere and that Maryland agencies should begin affording out-of-state gay couples all the rights they have been awarded in other places.

All 1829-1844 publications regarding the Book of Mormon

19th-Century Publications about the Book of Mormon (1829–1844)

Compiled and Edited by Matthew Roper, Research Scholar, Sandra A. Thorne, Editor
Since its publication in 1830, the Book of Mormon has been cast in a variety of roles by both Latter-day Saint and non–Latter-day Saint readers. Published literature relating to the book that appeared during the Prophet Joseph Smith's lifetime is one of the best historical windows for understanding how this ancient American scripture was interpreted, used, and understood by early readers. This collection represents an effort to gather together that body of literature and make it available to those interested in the origins of the Book of Mormon.

Why Don't We Practice What We Preach? A Meta-Analytic Review of Religious Racism

A meta-analytic review of past research evaluated the link between religiosity and racism in the United States since the Civil Rights Act. Religious racism partly reflects intergroup dynamics. That is, a strong religious in-group identity was associated with derogation of racial out-groups. Other races might be treated as out-groups because religion is practiced largely within race, because training in a religious in-group identity promotes general ethnocentrism, and because different others appear to be in competition for resources. In addition, religious racism is tied to basic life values of social conformity and respect for tradition.
