Church Historians, the Church Historian's Office, and the Recording and Publication of the Latter-day Saint Past

The publication of the Joseph Smith Papers and the construction of a new Church History Library provide the occasion for an academic symposium to examine the process of recording, collecting, compiling, and publishing the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Proposals are welcome in any of these areas and on related topics—the Church Historian's office, the writing of Joseph Smith's diaries and histories, the compilation of the seven-volume History of the Church, the preparation of the Joseph Smith Papers, and the work of official or unofficial diarists, clerks, and editors who recorded or compiled historical events and early discourses or who oversaw the manuscript collections of the Church: William Clayton, Willard Richards, George A. Smith, Martha and Howard Coray, Thomas Bullock, Wilford Woodruff, Andrew Jenson, Joseph Fielding Smith, and others.
